5K and 10K Race Course Modified and Certified.

We are pleased to announce a modified and improved race course has been established and USATF certification NH09007RF was received 3/25/2009. The start of the race is approximately the same place on Holt Avenue in Manchester (off east Industrial Drive) , NH, but the dog leg has been eliminated and the course is extended southerly. A course map will be placed online as soon as it is available on the USATF web site..

The 5K road racers run one loop (starts and finishes at the same spot) and the 10K runs two loops of the course. The 5K and 10K start together and runners can enter both races again this year. Medals will be awarded immediately after the 10K completion while the 5K race walk is in progress. There should be no waiting for awards this year and we have contracted with an experienced electronic timing service to help ensure a quality event. To help ensure a smooth sign-in process, there will be NO new Registrations accepted on the day of the race.

The 2009 races will take place Sunday May 10 with the 5K/10K road race starting at 9AM and the 5K race walk starting at 10 AM.

If you have not registered yet, the following link will take you to our Senior Games website to register and find additional information on the races and other events you may wish to compete in.

Tell your friends about the Senior Games and we hope to see you there.

2009 Games are Scheduled for May

The next Granite State Senior Games are scheduled for May 2009. Normally our Games are held in August, but because the 2009 National Games are being held in August this year, it was decided to hold ours in May to accommodate athletes. The individual event dates for May will be posted soon on this blog and our website.

Registration for our May Games will begin in January and we hope to have a large percentage of registrations online this year due to efficiencies gained with this method. Email invitations and hard copy registrations will be sent in January to our normal distribution.

Registration is now open for the August National Games in the San Francisco area so all those qualified should consider registering soon at this link- 2009 National Games.

Women's Basketball Added to 2008 Games

The 2008 Senior Games has added women's basketball for the first time. There is strong interest from teams in nearby states, but there are not many New Hampshire teams available to play. Thus, we are recruiting women age 50 or “better” to play 3 on 3 basketball and we will help establish teams and we have a location to practice. The tournament will be held Saturday August 23, 2008 from 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. at the Greater Manchester YMCA. The games are played half court with two 12 minute halves in accordance with National Senior Games rules.

If you would like to play on a team, have a team you would like to register, or have questions, please contact Jim Eddinger at (603) 669-8882 or jceddinger@hotmail.com.

Please pass this information to women athletes having an interest in playing on a New Hampshire GSSG women's basketball team. As usual, men's basketball continues and teams are encouraged to register ASAP.

YMCA named official training site

It was announced today that the Greater Manchester YMCA is the official training site for the Granite State Senior Games. A special Senior Games membership has been established and various clinics scheduled for many of the sports associated with the Senior Games. This membership is open to men and women and should be a great way to learn new skills and improve some rusty ones. To enquire into these training opportunities, stop by the Manchester YMCA or call Carol Gayman at 623-3558 x212.
You may also visit the YMCA website.

What is the Senior Games?

The Granite State Senior Games is the premier athletic event for New Hampshire seniors. Our Objectives are to promote health and fitness of seniors (men and women, age 50 and above) through participation in our annual Olympics and through year round attention to fitness and health. Events are held in the greater Manchester area and competition is held in five year age groups (50- 54, 55-59, etc.). Consider participating in the state Games this summer and you have an opportunity to qualify for the National Senior Games held every two years. Call 603 622-9041 or view our web site to register and learn more.

The is no upper age limit in the Senior Games. View the following video to see a New Hampshire medal winner in her 90's.

Check out our slide show and view many of the 500+ athletes of the 2005 Granite State Senior Games. You may find yourself or maybe a friend and you may also order any of the pictures online.

In addition to the annual state Games, individuals may qualify for the National Senior Games held every two years. Louisville, Kentucky was the site of the 2007 summer National Senior Games where eighty participants from New Hampshire competed and several medals were won including two gold medals.

In the summer of 2009, the Nationals will be held at Stanford University and other venues in the San Francisco Bay area. Over 13,000 athletes are expected to participate in California, making it the largest sporting event (number of participants) held anywhere in the world. This summer, the Games in New Hampshire and other states will qualify athletes for the 2009 National Games. What a thrill it would be to participate with 13,000 other athletes and carry the New Hampshire banner at the opening ceremonies.

Consider participation in the Games.
